INFORMATION FOR SCHOOL LEAVERS PROCEEDING FOR FURTHER STUDIES

The consensus worldwide is that an engineering programme should be of 4 years full time duration (excluding any intermediary training period(s)) to be recognised as meeting the academic requirements for the practice of engineering afterwards.

Council of Registered Professional Engineers of Mauritius (CRPE) has taken the same stand. In general, CRPE only recognised engineering degrees carried out after 4 years of full time studies. Hence, 4 year full time B.Eng degrees of University of Mauritius are generally accepted, subject to the class of the degree obtained.

Degrees which are accredited by one of the signatory of the Washington Accord as meeting the academic standard for an eventual registration to the grade of Chartered Engineer, or equivalent, are acceptable to CRPE for an eventual entry into the practice of Engineering in Mauritius. Currently, 3 year full time degrees or 4 year sandwich degrees from UK and UK universities, are generally NOT accepted. Anybody with a UK degree should demonstrate having done the 4 year full time M.Eng degree (or any other combination recognised by British authorities as meeting the academic requirements for practice of engineering as a Chartered Engineer in UK, and as established by the Engineering Council UK)

In general, for engineering degreesto be obtained from a foreign country, provided however that they are of minimum 4 years full time duration, students should ensure that:
  1. the said engineering degree programme is accredited by an Institution signatory of the Washington Accord as meeting the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer or equivalent; or
  2. the applicant should seek and submits original evidence from that country local Engineering Council (or equivalent) that  the said degree is acceptable in that country as meeting its academic requirement to enter into professional practice of Engineering, without further learning. This applies to all countries whose degrees are not accredited with the Washington Accord.

Prospective students are also invited to read Council's previous communication on the matter by clicking the following links: http://www.crpemauritius.com/files/news.php?news_id=47 and http://www.crpemauritius.com/files/save.php?id=91.

Prospective engineering students are invited to contact the Council of Registered Professional Engineers by email (engineeringcouncil@mail.gov.mu) should they have individual queries.
